READING NON-FICTION: PERSUASIVE LANGUAGE.

Read the following extract from a leaflet advertising Dunsinane Castle as a tourist attraction and highlight in yellow, what you think are persuasive words and phrases.

Set in the grounds of unrivalled splendour, Dunsinane Castle is a jewel in the crown of Scotland. Lovingly restored, and newly opened to the public, come and be one of the first visitors to experience the magic which inspired Shakespeare. Wonder at the tales of terror and learn about the fascinating events which took place here for thousands of years. No one ever leaves Dunsinane without being haunted by its mystery.

• The words ‘unrivalled splendour’ suggest this castle is magnificent and that  other other castle is like it.

• The phrase ‘jewel of the crown of Scotland’ creates a sense of a very special place to Scotland which gave Scotland every thing.

• When the writer uses the adjective ‘terror’ he is implying that It was very powerful place and used it’s power to get what It wanted.

• The words ‘haunted by It’s mystery’ make the reader feel like It was a terrifying place to be.

• The exaggeration ‘thousands of years’ would make the reader think It’s an old and sacred place and It Is a very special place for Scotland.

Emotive Language is language that makes the reader feel something, often pity or anger. Read the following extract from Greenpeace’s campaign to stop whale hunting and highlight in yellow, the emotive language.

A Japanese fleet has once again set off to defy international law and hunt protected whales. And once again the world will witness the unnecessary and destructive pretence of “scientific whaling” so the Japanese government can pop up a declining industry. The so-called research is supposedly done for the IWC. Yet the IWC never requested it and they say they don’t need the data. If it’s really data these “researchers” want, then the painful and protracted deaths of harpooned whales are completely unnecessary.

You are a review officer for ERO and you have found Tautoro School a successful school in Northland. You are going to write a favourable report for the Northland newspaper s so to Inform the public that Tautoro School once again passes the review.

TAUTORO SCHOOL REPORT

Tautoro School is a magnificent school and is a jewel of the crown of Northland. All students are achieving on their high standards and also achieving their goals on their Chromebooks, their families have invested in for their learning because they have excellent internet.

The students are getting volunteered to film things and make videos so that It can be posted onto Youtube so that the whole world can see what we are actually talking about. Tautoro school has the Chromebooks to work on so we don’t have to worry about buying stationary because we have the Chromebooks.

The students are so impressive that they are full of health and have lot of education and they will have a good career in the future. Thats why we have been doing lots of things and we can share the work we have done, out to the world.
